Introduction to R and Data Visualization for Bioinformatics
This workshop provides a basic introduction to the R language and visualizing data. No prior experience with R or any other programming language is expected or required. This workshop is designed to give biologists fundamental skills for manipulating data and creating visualizations in an R environment with a focus on bioinformatic data.
Included topics
- Introduction to the R language
- Data structures and conditional programming (for loops, functions, etc)
- Multiple techniques for plotting in R
- Building statistical models and visualizing outputs
- Use of common bioinformatic packages
- Analysis and interpretation of sequencing datasets
- Examples will include visualization of gene amplicon and single cell sequencing data
Dates and Registration
The registration fee for this workshop is $450 for general registrations and $250 for students.

Location and Times
The course will be held on the University of Maryland Baltimore campus in the Health Sciences Facility, Building 3, at 670 W. Baltimore St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
Check-in for the workshop will be from 10:00-10:30 AM on the 16th, content will start at 10:30. On the 17th and 18th, the workshop will start at 9:00 AM. On all days, workshop content will end at ~5:00 PM. All times are Eastern. Lunch and Continental Breakfast will be provided on all days of the workshop.
Driving Directions
Directions can be found here. There are two parking garages that you could use. One is the Saratoga garage located at 220 Arch St. The other is the BioPark garage located at 1 N. Poppleton St. There is also street parking that might be closer. Pay for this at pay stations along the streets. There is usually a 2 or 4 hour limit on street parking for how long you can be there without paying again.
Airports
The closest airport is Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). Other airports in the region (1 - 1.5 hours away) are Dulles and Reagan National.
Train
Baltimore is served by Amtrak and MARC train service.
